Anthropology of Light and Sound

A Monograph

Daniel A. Freedman

Synopsis: Manifesto

Motto: What if man is not a thinking animal, but a musical instrument?

This work asserts that the anthropological models of the 20th century are obsolete. In place of Homo Sapiens, Homo Resonans must emerge — a human being defined not by reason or labor, but by their fundamental nature as a resonant system that perceives and transforms the primary elements of being: Light and Sound.

This treatise constructs a new anthropology on three pillars: Ontology (Vibration as the foundation of the world), Anthropology (man as a "biological transducer") and Praxis (art and therapy as "technologies of consciousness").

Drawing on the author's personal experience in creating the Lux Aeterna Theatre and his dialogues from 1983–2008 with the pioneer of light-music, Bulat Galeyev, this work synthesizes the legacy of mystical philosophy with a scientific approach, offering a foundation for a new ethics, pedagogy, and culture of the future — the Culture of Resonance.

Protocol of Perception

Wave 1. Vacuum

We step into the domed space, and conventional logic fades. The darkness does not feel empty. It is denser than matter, as if an invisible substance were absorbing every thought.

[⧈⌇] The first sound is not heard; it is felt by the body. It is a bass pulse at the bottom of the range — twenty hertz, a frequency capable of making walls vibrate and the heart attune.

[●∽] The hall transforms into a single organism. The spectators, semi-recumbent, are like the cells of a giant system united by a common bloodstream.

Time begins to lose its linearity. The vacuum embraces, and we feel: the performance has already begun, though it has not yet started.

Wave 2. Ionization

[⧈⌇] The bass passes through the chair, through the spine, and the body reacts like plasma in a magnetic field. Each inhalation is photosynthesis. Each exhalation a quiet reaction of combustion without flame.

A beam flashes. A helium-cadmium laser glides across the dome. The darkness becomes viscous, as if molten silicone had been mixed into it.

[●∽] The body becomes a transducer. It translates sound into light, light into emotion, emotion into a physical tremor.

Wave 3. Resonance

Gravity is the first to surrender. The chair disappears — not literally, but in sensation.

[⧈⌇] The bones begin to function like strings. The blood in the veins becomes a liquid conductor: it transmits sound faster than thought.

[●∽] The dome transforms into a membrane, and we — into its taut strings. Sound and light do not adorn space — they are our very bodies.

Wave 4. Musical Clusters

The music densifies. Individual sounds gather into clusters, like atoms into molecules.

[⧈⌇] The laser passes through viscous oil, and the oil responds like living tissue. Interference becomes not a technique, but cosmogenesis.

[●∽] The clusters of sound and light merge. The cosmos is not out there, beyond the atmosphere. The cosmos is here. Inside.

Wave 5. Gravitation and Fall

The music suddenly condenses. It acquires mass. The double basses press down with low clusters.

[∞⩂] The interference patterns collapse. Deformable mirrors fold space, and the spectator can no longer distinguish up from down.

[∞⩂] The fall ceases to be an outward movement. It turns inward. A person falls into themself.

Wave 6. Inner Cosmos — Expansion

[⧈⌇] The dome dissolves, but does not disappear — it transforms into a transparent membrane that breathes along with each spectator. Breath becomes a cloud saturated with luminous dust.

[●∽] The "I" stretches, like a ring of light after a supernova explosion. We are expanded resonators.

[●∽] The expansion is not a fantasy; it is the fact of the experience.

Wave 7. Spectral Squall

[⧈⌇] Not "beams" — but living imprints of the cosmos. Metal bells disintegrate into ice dust and are immediately caught in a granular reverberation.

[⧈⌇] The blue 445 nm crosses viscous oil and becomes a jellyfish of photons; the green 520 nm disintegrates into swarms of nervous lines.

[●∽] We see the squall find its form.

Wave 8. Flight — Orbital Trajectories

Movement begins. The musical lines become trajectories: the clarinet describes an ellipse, the harp throws out radial ejections.

[⧈⌇] The blue spectrum is the trace of a low Earth orbit; the red goes vertical — this is the apogee, a breakthrough into free space.

[●∽] The flight is not a simulation. It is the orbital mechanics of feelings.

Wave 9. Merging

[⧈⌇] The laser interferences are no longer separate patterns but continuous fields flowing into one another.

[⧈⌇] Sound vibrations become light waves, and light waves begin to sound.

[●∽] Consciousness ceases to distinguish where there is sound, where there is light, where there is "I," where there is the cosmos.

Wave 10. Catharsis

Everything condenses — sound and light enter a critical point. The birth of a star flashes on the dome.

[☍] Two stars — one scarlet, one blue — slowly merge into a spiral, and in a moment of cosmic ecstasy explode with light.

[●∽] Catharsis. The cosmos, at last, sounds through us.

Wave 11. Return

[↻] The music begins to subside, like a wave that has lost its tidal force.

[●∽] The cosmos did not remain there, overhead. It has entered within — and will resonate in every step.

[↻] The return is complete. But in the heart remains the sensation of a flight that lasted 62 minutes and 26 seconds, and at the same time — an eternity.

Wave 12. Epilogue. Echo

The hall is plunged into silence. The door to the earthly street seems too sharp a boundary.

Soft impulses fluctuate within. The experience was not an illusion — the cosmos breathes in me and through me.

Each carries an echo with them — a quiet resonance that will continue to sound within for a long time.

Tuning Fork: Attunement to Perception

The text you hold in your hands was born from the direct experience described in the prologue. Everything that follows — Ontology, Anthropology, Praxis — is merely an attempt to find a language for this experience.

I invite you to use this book as an instrument, as a tuning fork for attuning your own perceptual apparatus.

Ontology: Homo Resonans

Chapter 1. The Primal Principle: From Silence to Vibration

In the beginning, there was not Sound and not Light, but Silence — the unmanifested Absolute. This silence is not absence, but fullness. The first act of creation breaks this silence. Vibration emerges — the primordial sound, the Logos, the Nada.

Chapter 2. The Duality of Manifestation: Sound and Light

The unified Vibration divides into two principles: Sound — dynamic, temporal (the verb of being) and Light — static, spatial (the noun of being). Theosophical tradition named this synthesis Fohat.

Chapter 3. Cosmogenesis: The Cosmos as a Symphony

Matter is frozen sound. The cosmos is an orchestra. Life is a melody sustained by light. The memory of this music is stored in the Akasha.

Chapter 4. The Ontological Status of Man, Art, and Ethics

Man is a node of vibrations in which the cosmos becomes aware of itself. Art is the practice of interacting with the forces of creation. Good is the harmony of waves; evil is destructive dissonance.

Final Formula: the world is a field of light and sound, and man is its living resonance.

Anthropology: Homo Resonans

1. Introduction: The Anthropological Gap

Homo Sapiens, Homo Faber, Homo Ludens describe what man does, not what he is. The key characteristic of Homo Sapiens — abstract language — became the cause of his profoundest alienation from the world (the "Great Demotion of the Word").

2. The New Paradigm: Man as a Resonant System

Homo Resonans is an open, self-tuning resonant system. The key term is transducer: man transforms external cosmic vibrations into internal experience.

3. The Anatomy of Perception: "Acoustic Body" and "Luminous Psyche"

The Acoustic Body is the somatic apparatus attuned to vibrations. The Luminous Psyche is the field of consciousness where vibrations take form.

4. The Mechanism of Action: The Goethean Principle of Co-Creation

Goethe showed that color is an event of encounter between light, darkness, and the eye. Our entire world is the result of such a co-creative act.

5. Conclusion: Man's New Purpose

The purpose of Homo Resonans becomes conscious and harmonious resonance with the world.

Final Formula:

Voices of Tradition: A Collection of Epigraphs

"If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration." — Nikola Tesla
"We are but a reed flute, and our music is all Thine." — Jalaluddin Rumi
"If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, Infinite." — William Blake
"Color is the keyboard, the eyes are the hammers, the soul is the piano with many strings." — Wassily Kandinsky

Praxis: Technologies of Consciousness

Part 1. Art as the Fundamental Practice

1.1 Sound as the Key: music is the most ancient technology for altering consciousness (rhythmic entrainment, neurochemistry).

1.2 Light as the Field: from Goethe through Malevich's Suprematism to immersive artists (James Turrell).

1.3 Synthesis as the Apex: Scriabin's "Mysterium"; cymatics.

1.4 Historical Praxis: ancient megaliths as "vibrational machines".

Part 2. Applied Practices: From Therapy to a New Culture

2.1 Acoustic Pharmacology: sound healing, binaural beats.

2.2 Vibrational Ethics and Education: good is the harmony of vibrations, evil is destructive dissonance.

Part 3. Testimony: Lux Aeterna and the Dialogues in Kazan

Two poles of a single search: from the dialogues with Bulat Galeyev (1983–2008)

[⌬✴] Twenty-five years of friendship and debate with the founder of the Kazan "Prometheus" Institute.

1. The Score: Letter or Spirit?

Bulat defended maximum respect for authorial intent (Scriabin, Kandinsky); I defended the absolute freedom of the director's intuition.

2. The Temple: Architecture for Resonance

We agreed on the ideal form (an egg-shaped, domed space), but diverged on light performance philosophy: Bulat favored automation and fixed recording; I favored live, in-the-moment performance.

3. The Cosmos: From the Stadium to the Starry Sky

The magic of genius loci — from Bulat's Kazan performances to my 1985 experience projecting a laser onto stadium clouds.

4. The Future: The Education of Perception

Bulat: teach children to draw music. I: teach children to compose music for paintings.

[∞⩂] We were heading towards the same summit — the whole, resonating human — from different sides of the mountain.
